FRB Top 20 Prospects: #18...Kyle Medvec

Kyle Medvec, Defense
Iowa Wild
6'6" 230 Pounds 6/16/1988
4th Round, 102nd Overall 2006 Draft

APPLE VALLEY NATIVE KYLE MEDVEC (trademark) checks in at #18 in our Top 20 this year. There may be no longer term project in the Wild system than Medvec; but putting in time to develop him could be worth it- the old adage is 6'6" players don't grow on trees. Technically age-wise he shouldn't be classified as a prospect, but since he's still on his Entry-Level Deal (he spent two years in the USHL and four at Vermont) we'll keep him to the mix.
It's always going to be about skating for Medvec; it is important for a player his size to have adequate footwork to increase the effectiveness of his natural reach. I don't think he'll be the most physically dominate player nor an offensive contributor; but he does have a bomb from the point and had nine goals in 65 games split between Orlando (ECHL) and Houston.
Medvec did get to serve as a Black Ace during Minnesota's brief time in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, so there is something to be said about getting that priviledge, and what the Brass thinks of him. Time will tell what we'll get out of him- The Wild have rather dubious track record of drafting local kids since its inception.

  1. "Dominate" is a verb.

    "Dominant" is an adjective.

    Otherwise nice write up.

  2. Seems to be a legend for OSB, fans rave about him all the time.
