FRB Top 20 Prospects: #17...Dylan Labbe

Dylan Labbe, Defense
Shawinigan (QMJHL)
6'1", 190 lbs, 1/9/95
4th Round, 107th Overall 2013 Draft

Dylan Labbe comes in at #17 as the second member of the 2013 draft class to grace our Top 20 this year. Spending this year with the Shawinigan Cataractes, Labbe scored 28 points (7G-21A) in 61 games during his first full QMJHL season. An injury did derail part of his year. Labbe was one of the bright spots for a Shawinigan team that fell back to earth from its Memorial Cup victory in 2012 (over Minnesota prospects/Saint John forwards Zack Phillips and Charlie Coyle). He came in as a rookie but left a leader.

However, Labbe isn't all about offense. The fourth round pick is a two-way defenseman who is smart with his positioning and strong on his skates. Labbe gets in the way of pucks by being physical for his size. He has some grit to his game. Despite that, he doesn't possess high-end speed and can struggle with the first couple strides. Labbe was able to balance it out by being in the right place more often that not yet that is an issue the higher he goes in hockey.

The 18 year-old defenseman may be one of two Wild blue line draftees to play in the CHL (2012 first round pick Mathew Dumba is the other), but Labbe fits in with the recent Wild draft trend for later round defensemen. He can move the puck while being defensively responsible. Still, Labbe is a longer project that has room to develop after one successful QMJHL year.
