2012 Minnesota Wild Prospects: #4 - Mathew Dumba

Mathew Dumba
Defense, 6'0" 184 Pounds
Red Deer Rebels (WHL) 20-37-57 in 69 Games

So, yet another year that FRB whiffs on guessing who Minnesota will take with their first round pick- even though we did our homework on what they want in a player. While we were disappointed in that we got it all wrong again, as we learn more about Matt Dumba as a player and a person, it could very well be that Minnesota has hit a towering moonshot of a home run when they took him 7th over all this last June.
Well, let's take a look at what Dumba can do.

So, he's got a filthy, filthy skillset. But there's more to him than just his ability to skate, shoot, and hit.

He's got tremendous character- the intangibles he has are what drew Minnesota to him. He's captained Canada's U-18 entry in the Spring, and is taking on a leadership role in Red Deer as well. Described as "ultra competitive", he plays with passion and zeal, even if that means he tends to try and do too much. But, I think its better in that a player is gonna rein in that sort of mentality and pick his spots instead of trying to prod someone into doing more. He plays an exciting style- the kind that puts butts in seats. Scouts I've talked to said he reminds them alot of Dion Phaneuf.

He's still got a ways to go before he's with the big club, even though he may have a massive upside, maybe more so than Jonas Brodin. Minnesota will take their time with him, even though he was on Minnesota's CHL recall list.

  1. Finally, the moment of suspense is reached.

Will it be Brodin, Coyle. . . or Coyle, Brodin?

Wild Nation holds its collective breath.

  2. Gonna be honest here, and go against what everyone else says, but Dumba is the prospect I am most excited about. The huge open-ice hits, the incredible skating, and of course the booming clapper, love it! He looks to be up there with Granlund (and at one point Gaborik) as the most exciting prospect the Wild has ever had in their system.
